Paul Heyman On Why He Pitched For CM Punk To Break The Streak

Despite reaching a conclusion in 2014, The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak is still one of the most revered accomplishments in sports entertainment. Paul Heyman spoke to Chael Sonnen on You're Welcome! this week, and said if he'd had his way, the streak would have been broken by CM Punk the year prior.

"I actually pitched it for Punk, because I thought it was the only thing that was going to keep Punk from eventually leaving WWE," Heyman said. "Even before that match, he was itching to get out."

Ultimately Punk ended up leaving the WWE less than a year later. After a tumultuous split with WWE that carried on over the course of several months, Punk signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He's currently training in preparation for a fight, which has yet to be scheduled.

Heyman would elaborate on why he thought that Punk breaking the streak would keep him around WWE, despite being unhappy there.

"I figured if they (gave Punk) this victory, he needed to stay a while and capitalize on it. That idea never came to fruition. Then of course the stars were just aligned for it to be Brock," Heyman said.
