WWE Leaked Memo For Announcers With Rules And Banned Terms Resurfaces
An old leaked WWE memo from 2008 resurfaced on Reddit and has been getting some media, including articles on Uproxx, Deadspin and Complex, which contain photos of the memo. We actually reported on the memo back in 2013. The list contains tips and rules for the WWE announcers so they become better acquainted with the WWE style of calling matches.
Some of the traditional repeated quips fans have complained about can be attributed to these notes, as well as plenty of the positive aspects of commentary as well. The notes also feature a host of terms that WWE wanted to keep off of television at the time, surprisingly enough, including "sports entertainment."
"Belt," "strap," "the business," "our industry," "pro wrestling/pro wrestler," "house show," "war," "performance/performer," "DQ," "U.S.," "hospital," "faction," "the title is on the line," "talent," "interesting," "shot," "backstage," "feud," "fans," and others were included in the extensive list of terms announcers were instructed to not say on air.
Other words to avoid include "hatred," "titles changing hands," and Vince McMahon not wanting the term "Granddaddy of them all" used to describe WrestleMania, because he feels that it makes the event feel old.
The announcers were also instructed explicitly to "not read dirt sheets" by McMahon, as he wanted the announcers to stop saying things like "five star match."
