It rarely seems like two weeks go by without a UFC event these days, but prior to UFC Fight Night 77 from Sao Paulo, it’d been over a month since the company had a major event. While Saturday’s event wasn’t breaking any records, it was certainly above the effort on paper that the UFC put forth in Dublin a couple of weeks ago.
Headlined by Vitor Belfort and Dan Henderson’s third fight, the card highlighted two legends in a post-TRT era in MMA. Belfort, who looked visibly different physically than when he was a user of TRT, received a hero’s welcome back to Brazil. A huge punch about a minute in made that ovation even louder, as Belfort flattened Henderson and followed up with a ground attack that stopped the fight.
Glover Teixeira returned to his home country and obliterated Patrick Cummins with a TKO stoppage. The blueprint on Cummins has been to punch him in the face and eventually he’ll crumble and fall victim to poor footwork. Teixeira at 36 years old, withstood the storm of takedown attempts and followed that blueprint to earn the win.
Highly touted prospect Thomas Almeida also appeared on the card, continuing his unbelievable streak of wins with a brutal knockout win over Anthony Birchak. Almeida has shown his fair share of flaws, but continues to barrell his way to the top of the Bantamweight rankings.
This is the last stop for the UFC before next weekend’s giant UFC 193 show, which features Ronda Rousey defending her title against the undefeated Holly Holm.
