UFC Fight Night 86 Results: Former UFC Champion Dominates, Another Former Contender Knocked Out
The UFC has been in a bit of a proverbial calm before the storm lately, as they've had a couple of weeks off before gearing up for one of the most packed stretches they've ever had. At Sunday's UFC Fight Night 86, they shifted into first gear just two weeks ahead of UFC 197.
The show featured four heavyweight bouts at the top of the card, which was seen as a big sink or swim move. While fights like Tony Johnson vs. Marcin Tybura didn't deliver, ones like Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Derrick Lewis did.
UFC Fight Night 86 was main evented by former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos looking to start a run against the surging Ben Rothwell. Rothwell is a veteran of nearly 40 fights, and his unusual style has scored him some big wins over Alistair Overeem, Josh Barnett and other big names in the past.

The two threw leather early on, with Junior dos Santos fighting very cautiously. In the second round, JDS looked like he was getting much more comfortable until an eye poke stopped the action. A dos Santos kick put Rothwell on the seat of his pants to close the second. The dominance of dos Santos continued throughout the third and fourth rounds before he coasted a little bit in the fifth on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Dos Santos showed incredible strategy and movement during this fight, fixing some mistakes that have cost him bouts in the past.
Gonzaga has seen quite a fall from grace since his epic upset win over Mirko CroCop in 2007, and subsequent title shot. He was KO'd for the 8th time since that fight, this time at the hands of surging heavyweight Derrick Lewis. Lewis has won six UFC fights at heavyweight in less than two years on the roster. Lewis called out Roy Nelson after the fight, and Nelson accepted the challenge on Facebook.
