Floyd Mayweather Vs. Conor McGregor Fight In The Works?
Conor McGregor may have lost his most recent fight at UFC 196 against Nate Diaz, but if the rumors are true, he could be in for perhaps the biggest fight in combat sports history — against Floyd Mayweather.
The Sun reported this morning that the two sides have been in talks for a huge boxing match in Las Vegas.
Floyd went mad after Conor said he would crush him and knock him out in 30 seconds, he's obsessed with making Conor eat his words. Floyd is calling the shots. It's strictly boxing and Conor will have to lose roughly 25lbs. It was agreed in principle on May 2, but Floyd wouldn't reveal the identity of his opponent until last night when he told friends he'll be fighting Conor.
It's also said that Conor McGregor would earn $10.1 million, while the undefeated and currently retired Mayweather would stand to make $144.8 million.
"I'm open to discussions, come at me," McGregor told The Independent in March of a fight with Mayweather. "But I hold the key and it's me who holds the key to the fight game. I am open minded, I am open to discussion, I love competition, I love fighting. It would be nice to make that fight if the fans were interested and wanted to see it."
Mayweather retired in 2015 after a dominant victory over Andre Berto and an underwhelming PPV performance by his standards. While McGregor is coming off of a loss to Nate Diaz, the UFC 196 show was among UFC's best-selling of all-time. McGregor was pulled from his planned UFC 200 re-match with Diaz after refusing to participate in media obligations.
It's difficult to believe this fight could go down without the UFC's blessing, as he's under contract to the company. Also, the pay discrepancy is something that the Irishman likely wouldn't accept.
