UFC 201 Highlights, What's Next For Tyron Woodley, WSOF Adds NYC Card
- Tyron Woodley continued the trend of champions falling in 2016, knocking Robbie Lawler off the welterweight pedestal Saturday night at UFC 201. Woodley won the belt with a first round knockout, earning his first UFC title in the process.
Lawler was looking to secure his third title defense, but instead joined a growing list of fighters unable to remain champion that includes the likes of Fabricio Werdum, T.J. Dillashaw, Holly Holm and Miesha Tate.
- Stephen Thompson is viewed as the No. 1 contender to new UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, but "The Chosen One" has someone else in mind for his first title defense. Shortly after besting Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 Saturday night, Woodley called out Nick Diaz.
"You said that you wanted to fight Lawler. Now you get the opportunity," Woodley told Thompson during the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show. "Now Nick Diaz is coming off suspension in two days. If he wants to fight on the same card with his brother in August, he can against me. That's the money fight. Let's go get it. I'm ready."
Woodley is referring to the UFC 202 card set for August 20 which will feature Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor in a welterweight clash.
- The UFC will debut in New York City this November with UFC 205, but the World Series of Fighting has secured New Year's Eve rights to hold an event at Madison Square Garden. The promotion announced over the weekend plans for WSOF 36 to be held in NYC.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring our exciting, world championship live event series to The Big Apple, where fans have been anxiously waiting for years, for live professional MMA action to be able to happen in their city," WSOF CEO Carlos Silva said in a press release. "We have been working diligently with the staff at the New York State Athletic Commission as well as the executives at Madison Square Garden to complete all of the necessary steps to make this historic and great event happen on New Year's Eve."
While most WSOF events air on NBC Sports Network, this card will be broadcast live on NBC. So far, no bouts have been announced for the event.
