UFC Fighter Punished For Attacking Referee, Former UFC Champ Suspended, Top Contender Issues Threat
- Roy Nelson has received his punishment from the top athletic office in Brazil. Earlier this year, "Big Country" kicked referee John McCarthy after Nelson felt he was too slow to stop a fight with Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. Nelson won the bout via finish at UFC Fight Night 95.
The Brazilian Superior Justice Court of MMA suspended Nelson for ninth months and fined him $24,000, the STJDMMA told MMAFighting.com recently. Nelson could have faced a suspension of 25 months and fine of $40,000, but he was able to discuss the situation with the court prior to the ruling.
Nelson could also have the suspension and fine cut down even more if he is to make a public apology to McCarthy either at a sanctioned UFC event or inside the Octagon. Following the incident, Nelson apologized backstage to McCarthy.
- Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida has been suspended 18 months by USADA for taking a banned substance, 7 keto DHEA. "The Dragon" admitted his use of the banned substance prior to failing an out-of-competition drug test. He was removed from a planned bout with Dan Henderson earlier this year.
"During an out-of-competition test conducted on April 8, 2016, Machida, 38, declared the use of a product containing 7 keto-dehydroepiandrosterone (7 keto DHEA) on his sample collection paperwork. 7 keto DHEA is a prohibited substance in the class of Anabolic Agents and prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the WADA Prohibited List," USADA officials wrote in the release. "Upon notice from USADA of his potential violation, Machida immediately confirmed his use of the product, which listed 7-keto-DHEA as an ingredient, and fully cooperated with the subsequent investigation after advising USADA that he did not realize 7-keto-DHEA was a prohibited substance when he used the product."
Machida will be cleared to fight again in October 2017.
- If the UFC will not give Khabib Nurmagomedov what he wants, the unbeaten lightweight is prepared to walk away. "The Eagle" posted on social media recently that he wants his shot at Conor McGregor and the 155-pound title or else.
I want to fight for @ufc title for respect but if I don't get my title shot next I have different plan I won't be fighting in UFC @danawhite
