Backstage Report On Latest WWE Title Changes

It was a weekend of title changes for WWE as the promotion headed to Mexico and Latin America for a several day tour. And arguably the biggest, and most shocking title change, occurred on "SmackDown" in Mexico City, where Sami Zayn defeated CM Punk to regain the Undisputed WWE Championship. Discussing the unexpected title change on "Wrestling Observer Radio," Dave Meltzer had no info regarding why WWE decided to put the belt back on Zayn, beyond saying that it was debated, and that the reason behind it would be revealed down the road.

"With the Sami Zayn thing, the basic gist was...they have a storyline that will make sense when you look back on it, is what I was told," Meltzer said. "'When it's all said and done, this will all make sense.' There were certainly people who were against it, but they did it, and that was that."

Meltzer was less surprised about the other big title change over the weekend, which saw Stephanie Vaquer regain the WWE Women's World Championship from Liv Morgan during a live event in Vaquer's home country of Chile. He did, however, take issue with how the title was changed, feeling that WWE tried too hard to protect Morgan by giving her a visual pin that Becky Lynch, serving as special guest referee, refused to count. Meltzer theorized that WWE went about things that way because of WWE's impending plans to put Lynch and Morgan against each other.

"It sets up Liv and Becky, obviously, down the line, which we all knew they were going to [do] anyway," Meltzer said. "So that was what they did. They did a deal where Liv pushed Becky, so that's why Becky wouldn't count the three when Liv hit the Oblivion. And then Stephanie came back to win. So that was that."
