Baron Corbin Explains Why He Viewed WWE SummerSlam As A 'White Whale' In His Career

In Herman Melville's classic novel "Moby-Dick," the character Captain Ahab has committed himself to hunting the white whale that caused him to lose his leg. For many, Ahab's pursuit of the white whale has become a symbol for their own goals, and that includes WWE star Baron Corbin. During an interview with "TheSportster," Corbin looked back at his match at this year's WWE SummerSlam, and expressed why it was so important to him. 

"I always felt like SummerSlam was my white whale, even though I've had some big SummerSlam matches. I had [John] Cena to open SummerSlam, I had Finn Balor, but he pulled 'The Demon' out, and that match lasted like four minutes," Corbin said.

He further explained that he's had two or three other planned SummerSlam matches with the likes of Kalisto and Rey Mysterio that never panned out. Because of these failed would-be matchups, Corbin expresses that SummerSlam began to feel like an icon of bad luck to him, and an event he grew to have unfinished business with. "So getting that opportunity in Minnesota was humongous," he expressed. "And for a title?" 

Following his WWE return in July, Corbin defeated Trick Williams at SummerSlam to win the United States Championship. However, he'd go on to lose the title back to Williams at WWE Sunday Night's Main Event the following month.
