AJ Lee Won Over WWE Officials With Promo During Paid Tryout

At the peak of her WWE career, AJ Lee stood out amongst the rest of the Women's Roster, as she flaunted her geeky interests, rejecting the Diva stereotype and focusing on her mic skills and in-ring work. Today, AJ Lee is an inspiration to many of the current-day women's wrestlers in WWE, but her journey had to begin somewhere. 

During an interview with "iHeart Women's Sports' Mind Over Mountain," AJ Lee recalled that there were tryout programs, which had an entry fee, and after a two-year stint of saving, she attended one of the aforementioned programs alongside 400 other people. 

"For three days, they would just watch you, sort of, do wrestling drills and do this thing called 'cutting a promo,'" she recalled. 

While the schedule originally had the promo drills on a dedicated day, AJ Lee claims she was pulled out of the ring on her very first day and instructed to cut one. 

"I didn't prepare anything, I was like freaking out," she admitted. "And then I just went into a character that, like, I think had been in me for so long and cut a promo, and you know, I was told that was like the moment they were like, 'Okay, well, we'll give her a chance.'"

AJ Lee then clarified that the character she performed as during the promo wasn't even 'AJ Lee' yet, but still her 'Miss April' character instead. 

"I was still Miss April," she laughing recalled.
