Chelsea Green Explains How She Won WWE Fans Over: 'It Was This Perfect Storm'
After returning to WWE, Chelsea Green reestablished herself as a heel, and built a character that wasn't just a bad guy but often threw tantrums when she didn't get her way. Conversely, Green is now a major fan favorite, with many praising WWE for positioning her to win the WWE Women's Championship at SummerSlam.
"It was this perfect storm of them liking this annoying character but maybe also liking my take on wrestling? It's kind of a fresh take because we've had a lot of the same takes on wrestling for many years" she suggested during an interview alongside Matt Cardona on "Casual with Katie Nolan." While she didn't explicitly say which take she referred to, Green has made statements where she's called out promos that sound "too wrestling-y" recently. Green explained that it's difficult to create new characters that also break through current pop culture trends, while still being fresh ideas that haven't been done before.
"At this point in time, I really feel like it's best to pull from old movies and things we can redo in our own way," she exclaimed. "I wanted this character to be the opposite of what a hot girl should be." She then explained that the character she had in mind is funny and self-deprecating, while she does still want to be a "hot girl."
"There's so many layers to this," Green said of her character upon returning to WWE, describing herself as a "Karen" that was very over the top. "I added some comedy to it as time went on, and she got funnier, and funnier, and then I think people realized through media, through our Netflix show Unreal, through interviews that, 'Oh, maybe I like her?'"
