MVP Explains How Actor & Former WWE Writer Freddie Prinze Jr. Won Him Over
Freddie Prinze Jr. is best known for his acting career, but he also spent three years working in WWE as a writer, and continues to share his love for the industry today. Prinze wrote for WWE from 2008 until 2011, and speaking on his "Marking Out" podcast, MVP admitted that it took some time for him to warm up to Prinze backstage.
"I did not like Freddie Prinze Jr. initially," he admitted. The veteran noted that the period in question was around his WWE SummerSlam clash against Jeff Hardy in 2008, and MVP felt the entire storyline hinged on a single promo a few nights before the show. Along with his preferred writer, MVP had to work with Prinze on the promo. "My thought, in that old school wrestling mentality, [was]: 'This old-teeny-bop-a** f**king 'Tiger Beat' actor, 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' a**, come tell me something about wrestling?'"
MVP admitted that his attitude was ignorant, recalling how his favorite writer kept trying to convince him to work with Prinze. Eventually, MVP conceded. As they were working on the promo, neither MVP nor the other writer could come up with the right final line. MVP recalled Prinze pacing back-and-forth across the room and muttering something to himself, before he suddenly came up with an amazing pitch.
"The crazy part is, all these years later, I don't know what it was. I just remember he said it and I didn't want to like it but it was what we needed," MVP stated. "I was not happy about that! But he was right." After that, MVP spent more time with Prinze and found out they had a lot in common. "I realized I like this dude, man! 'Freddie, you're all right, man!' ... To this day, he and I are good friends."
