For many, it appeared Drake Maverick's wrestling career ended back in 2021, with the former WWE/TNA wrestler was released by WWE as a wrestler, though he rehired to work with the promotion as a writer. But Maverick has wound up lacing up the boots again, getting permission from WWE to work dates for PROGRESS Wrestling in his hometown of Birmingham, England, under his old ring name Rockstar Spud. Speaking with "Simon Miller" about his comeback, Maverick admitted that this would likely not be an extended comeback, and that he received the offer to wrestle at the most inopportune of times.

"I think it's the first time and only time, maybe even the last time," Maverick said. "I don't know. This landed on my lap two weeks ago, thirty minutes before I was going to dinner with my wife for her 40th birthday."

Maverick's wife, wrestler Renee Michelle, was understanding and supportive of Maverick wrestling again, which helped him to embrace having one more run. He admitted, however, that he not only was caught off guard by the opportunity, but had resigned himself to never wrestling again and just enjoying what he had in life. Ultimately, he's found his return to be a blessing, both in giving him a routine and giving him a chance to continue doing what he loves.

"I'm just feeling really good, and this landed on my lap is just one of those many blessings that you never thought would happen," Maverick said. "But like, I get to do this in my hometown one more time, and it sounds like we're going to sell out, which is a feather in my cap I hope.

"So I'm kind of overwhelmed in a good way. I'm feeling...I'm feeling really great, and every time I come home, I feel so nostalgic. Birmingham has done a lot for me, British wrestling has done a lot for me, so this is just a wonderful day out with the lads for young James."
