WWE NXT Champion Grayson Waller Gets Opportunistic Win In Halloween Havoc Main Event, Will Face CM Punk
Grayson Waller defeated Tony D'Angelo to retain the NXT Championship during "WWE NXT" Halloween Havoc, finding out afterwards that he will be facing CM Punk.
D'Angelo started the match strong, beating Waller out of the ring, depositing him back in, and then continuing to beat him out of the other side of the ring. D'Angelo gave chase once more but was sent into the steel steps. Though he quickly corrected that by backdropping Waller onto the steps himself.
D'Angelo eventually fell victim to an eye rake and a neckbreaker against the steel of the turnbuckle, and Waller continued to focus on the neck, making use of the ring skirt to garrote his challenger before digging his knee in against the ropes.
The action went to the outside yet again as Waller spiked D'Angelo onto the steel steps with a DDT. He started to goad D'Angelo's wife and son in the crowd, prompting an incensed D'Angelo to begin beating away at the champion, driving him onto the steel steps once more.
Waller went on to hit a Rolling Cutter to D'Angelo to put him through the announcer's desk, looking to follow up with a second in the ring but getting planted with a chokeslam instead.
D'Angelo considered using a crowbar before the referee intervened, getting bumped over in the subsequent clash and unable to count when D'Angelo had Waller beat. That also allowed Waller to hit D'Angelo with the crowbar himself, following up with a rolling cutter for the winning pinfall.
After the match, Danhausen introduced a special message from CM Punk, announcing that he will be challenging Waller for the NXT Championship on Wednesday's show.
D'Angelo was challenging for the title he had lost to Waller in a four-way also involving Cruz Montana and Zilla Fatu at Heatwave in August. Waller was making just his second defense, having seen off EK Prosper in late September.
