WWE's Drew McIntyre Pitched Vince McMahon On Removing Someone's Arm With Sword
In 2020, Drew McIntyre began walking to the ring with a Scottish claymore, playing off of his finishing move. During an appearance on "Insight with Chris Van Vliet," McIntyre recounted once pitching a brutal scene to add to the lore of the weapon during talks with Vince McMahon, inspired by scenes from a Steven Spielberg movie.
"I was like, '[In] "Saving Private Ryan," they use actors — amputees, et cetera — they lop off the limbs, they're actually missing; very realistic. I think at 'Mania or something, we should have a fight sequence where we end up backstage. Then we hit the pre-tape where I swing the sword at somebody — woosh, arm comes off.' Finally, I use the sword, pay it off!" he explained.
McIntyre argued that it bothered him that he had the sword for as long as he did while never getting to actually use it on someone, and the best way he could keep it relevant would be to actually use it. The segment never came to pass, however. Ultimately, McIntyre explained that he chose to stop carrying the sword because it no longer fit into the evolution of his character.
"The way the character was evolving at that period, from losing the big match Clash at the Castle in front of my family, et cetera, you know — the downward spiral?" he continued. "I felt weird to go real deep with the character, and really go into the trauma and the PTSD with the character and stand there with a giant sword in my hand while trying to sell that story."
It's not out of the question for the sword to one day return. McIntyre stated that he'd be open to bringing it back for a special entrance or even for a period of time, as he loved carrying it.
"I'm proud of my Scottish roots," he said, noting that the sword, Angela, is named after his late mother.
