David Finlay Details Aspects Of AEW He's Still Adjusting To
AEW's David Finlay has detailed the various things that he has had to adapt to since making the switch from NJPW.
Finlay joined AEW earlier this year after spending over a decade in NJPW, where he was a two-time IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion. Despite being a supremely experienced wrestler, Finlay has had to get accustomed to his new surroundings, particularly the wrestling style.
"I feel like work-wise, I'm still trying to figure it out because it's just a completely different style. But the schedule is so much nicer. I went from, like, a short tour would be like 10 days, which is easy, but then we'd have the G1, which is 6 weeks long, and it's the G1, it's the toughest tournament in the world," he said when speaking to Chris Jericho on "Talk is Jericho."
Finlay also noted that he has had to adjust to the way AEW films its TV shows compared to NJPW, particularly the cameras, as well as sticking to the time allotted for each match.
"Yeah, I'm still adjusting [to the cameras]. I had a little bit of experience working for companies in the States, like just a tiny bit, so it wasn't completely foreign to me. But, like, in New Japan, it's like, do the match and they'll catch you. Also, if you're in the main event in New Japan, it's like, yeah, however long you want to go. If you get told time, it's usually, like, a range, like from here to here, whatever," he said.
He explained that AEW has stricter time limits for matches and segments, and he believes that working within those limits requires a certain level of skill. However, he said he enjoys working in such environments, where he has to constantly adapt during a match. Since debuting in AEW, Finlay has joined forces with fellow former NJPW stars Clark Connors and Gabe Kidd. The trio even won the AEW World Trios Championship, although their reign lasted just a few days.
