WWE's Booker T Shares His Perspective Of The Shockmaster Incident In WCW
It may have taken place over thirty years ago, but The Shockmaster incident from 1993 WCW remains a topic many in wrestling are more than happy to discuss, especially if they were there for it. And WWE Hall of Famer Booker T wasn't just there for The Shockmaster's plunge, he was up close and personal. Appearing on "Insight with Chris Van Vliet," Booker at first focused on how the segment featuring the incident was supposed to set up his first ever main event match, with him, Stevie Ray, and Sid Vicious battling Shockmaster, Sting, and Davey Boy Smith. Turning his attention to the incident, Booker blamed it on a production decision made earlier in the day.
"The thing is, a lot of people don't realize, we rehearsed that thing earlier," Booker said. "We went over it. But somehow, I think the wall that they had, they wanted it to be a little more sturdier. So they put that board down at the bottom. And I don't think anybody told Fred. And Fred...Fred had the mask on. He couldn't see nothing. It wasn't a great idea, you know, from jump street, even though we just used it around here not too long ago."
In the immediate aftermath of Shockmaster's fall, Booker recalled doing his best to not break character, though Sid's actions made it hard for him to do so.
"I was so green and so young I just tried to keep a straight face," Booker said. "I just tried to keep my composure. And Sid goes 'I told ya!' That's what Sid said. And I didn't want to laugh. It was one of those moments. I felt really, really bad for Fred, because the helmet came off, the glitter went off. And I hate glitter. I hate...getting glitter on me. It's just one of my phobias. It was all over the place. And then you just knew things were going to change for him after that."
