WWE Reportedly Covered Hip Surgery Costs For Former AAA Star Psicosis
Over the years, it has been the standard for WWE and AEW to cover the surgeries of their wrestlers, particularly bigger names. But now, WWE is making news by covering the surgery costs of a luchador that, while briefly working for WWE a few decades ago, is otherwise not associated with the promotion. In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that WWE had paid for the hip replacement surgery of Dionicio Castellanos, better known as luchador Psicosis and Nicho el Millonario.
The decision to pay for the surgery, which is believed to have cost $44K, came from WWE President Nick Khan, and helped by Psicosis being under a WWE Legend's Contract. However, Meltzer describes the operation as being "spearheaded" by WWE luchador Rey Mysterio. Along with Juventud Guerrera, Psicosis is considered to be a key rival for Mysterio during the early portion of his career. Their rivalry spanned promotions such as AAA, the Japanese promotion WAR, ECW, and WCW, where the two notably competed in the acclaimed opening match at Bash at the Beach 1996, the site of the formation of the nWo.
Even separate from his matches with Mysterio, Psicosis has had a memorable career, winning the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship twice, the AAA World Tag Team Championships with Joe Lider, and the Mexican National Welterweight Championship twice. He would briefly compete for WWE from 2005 to 2006 as part of the controversial Mexicools stable alongside Guerrera and Super Crazy. He had continued to compete in Mexico up until two years ago, when he was forced to have emergency surgery on his hip following an injury. He was inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame later that year.
