WWE's Nattie Details Process Of Pitching Characters To Vince McMahon & Triple H
WWE star Natalya has gone through quite a few gimmicks in her career, before seemingly finally landing on her gritter, built-the-dungeon, hardened veteran character Nattie that she first debuted in Bloodsport. With the ways WWE leadership has changed over the years, she explained the differences in pitching ideas to Vince McMahon and now, Paul "Triple H" Levesque on "Busted Open Radio."
Nattie gave credit to McMahon, and said there are ideas she pitched that he didn't like, but he let her try them. That went both ways, however, and not always to her benefit, initially, with one infamous gimmick.
"We had this really cool relationship where there were suggestions that were made to me and I was like, 'Ugh. I don't love this,'" Nattie said. "But, because I agreed to do that character, it was the flatulence character or whatever. I knew I didn't like it. I knew it wasn't the right thing, but when it didn't work out, and trust me, it didn't, then I was able to go and pitch to Vince other stuff I wanted to do and he said 'yes.' He's like, 'Because you gave that other thing a chance, I'm absolutely willing to let you guys do this.' In some ways, it goes back to what John Cena said... 'You gotta be coachable.'"
She said the way she looks at her career after being with WWE for such a long time is that they are all actors in a play or a movie. If she was getting paid to be in a movie, she wouldn't tell Steven Spielberg or Robert Zemeckis she wouldn't do something.
Triple H brings in Nattie
Natalya has worked as Nattie in both AAA, as well as in "WWE NXT," where she was recently defeated by Jaida Parker in a submission match. She has also brought the character to the main roster, where she's feuded with Maxxine Dupri. Nattie said she has Triple H to thank for letting her bring the gritter version of herself to WWE television.
"With Triple H, when I brought the Nattie character to him, he watched my Nattie character at Triplemania," Nattie explained. "I really wanted to show him this different side of me, and Triple H was super supportive. He was very much, 'Let's do it.' He was very collaborative. Triple H wanted to work with me on all these different aspects. He's like, 'Let's try it out at AAA and let's do it here. Let's build vignettes.'"
Nattie last appeared on "WWE Raw" in a victory over Dupri on March 16. She said on "Busted Open Radio" she's excited to bring the character back to the main roster, following her loss at "NXT" Heatwave. She said that what she likes about Triple H and his booking is that he waits for things to be done at the right moment.
